American Brown Ale


Malt forward flavor & aroma but with distinct hop bitterness 30 - 40 IBUs, rich dark brown in color.


  • 3 lbs amber LME
  • 1 lb amber DME
  • 3 lbs American pale or 2 row malt
  • 1/2 lb pale chocolate malt
  • 1/2 lb Patagonia Especial malt (L 130 -140)
  • 1/2 lb wheat malt
  • 1 oz Chinook whole hops (bittering 60 min)
  • 1/2 Chinook whole hops (flavor 20 min)
  • 1/2 oz Willamette whole hops (3 min)
  • 1 tsp Irish moss (15 min)

Primary Ferment: 7 days
Secondary Ferment: 7 days

Mash grains @ 152 F for 60 min, sparge w/ 175 F water.
Bring wort to a boil and add extracts. Add hops and Irish moss as indicated.
Force cool to 85 F & top up w/ cold water to 5 gal total volume. Pitch Wyeast American ale 1056 @ 68 F.
