American Brown Ale


this is a malty Brown/red ale using mostly European grains, yeast and hops and a American base malt. Color can be adjusted to have a more red color buy using light roasted barley and 1-2 more oz. of Cara Red/ Amber.


  • L.M.E.
  • 6 lbs. Light/golden LME ( briess)
  • Grains
  • 8 oz. Crystal 50-60L
  • 4 oz. Cara Red/ Cara Amber
  • 2 oz. Melanoidin
  • 2 oz Roasted Barley ( light roasted Barley can also be used)
  • Hops
  • 1/2 oz Millennium 60 min. boil
  • 1/2 oz Northdown 15 min. boil
  • 1/2 oz Northdown 5 min boil
  • Yeast
  • German Ale Activator Wyeast

Additional Instructions

Primary Ferment: 14 days
Secondary Ferment: Not absolutely need, but 3-5 days

steep grains in 3 gal. of water for 30 min. at 150 -155 F. Bring to boil and add 3 lbs. of the LME along with the 1/2 oz of millennium. At the 45 min mark add the 1/2 of Northdown hops along with the rest of the LME. At the 55 min mark add the last edition of northdown hops.
